To protect consumers and improve the delivery of legitimate text messages, organizations that text U.S. phone numbers must now register the numbers used for their SMS campaigns. This guide answers the most common questions about A2P 10DLC and how to register your company through CallHippo.
What is A2P 10DLC?
These registration requirements are called “A2P 10DLC” because they relate to Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging sent over standard 10-digit long code (10DLC) phone numbers. This is relevant for every organization that sends SMS to U.S. numbers using CallHippo numbers, because U.S. carriers treat all messages that go through CallHippo as A2P.
What is The Campaign Registry (TCR)?
The Campaign Registry (TCR) is the authority that handles the registration of 10DLC messaging campaigns. It works with carriers, messaging companies, and industry partners to establish common standards for A2P 10DLC messaging. CallHippo acts as your single point of contact for registering campaigns — you do not need to contact the TCR directly.
Will my company be affected?
All companies that send SMS to U.S. numbers are affected by these industry rules. If you do not text U.S. numbers, you do not need to do anything. If you do, CallHippo encourages you to get aligned with A2P 10DLC as soon as possible.
What happens if I don’t register?
If you meet the criteria but do not register, your message traffic may be subject to heavier carrier filtering and may incur increased per-message carrier fees.
How do I register?
A2P 10DLC Standard registration has two parts:
- Brand registration — provide basic company information to register your brand. This must exactly match the business information associated with your EIN listing (for U.S. companies).
- Campaign registration — register your campaign by describing your use case and the type of messages you send.
What is my brand registration type?
You need to register as a STANDARD brand category, and you will register both your brand and your campaign(s).
Is there a cost?
The Campaign Registry charges registration and usage fees based on messaging use. Typical recurring fees for STANDARD brands include:
- Standard use case: $15/month
- T-Mobile: $55 one-time fee per campaign
- Additional vetting (optional): $45 one-time fee, for very high message volumes
- If the use case is submitted for agents, franchises, or local branches, the charge would be $30.
These fees are subject to change; CallHippo will share the latest updates as they become available.
What information do I need to register?
Be ready to provide the following:
- Legal company name (or “Doing Business As” name) and brand name — it should match the name on your business tax returns.
- Full business address.
- Business details: country of registration, business entity, industry, Tax Number/ID/EIN, website, and stock symbol (if publicly traded).
- Contact information (name, email, phone number).
- Usage details to select the right campaign(s): campaign type/use case, a use-case description, two sample messages, and the numbers to link to the campaign.
Once you provide these details, CallHippo reviews everything and submits your request, and may contact you if more information is needed.
How long does approval take?
End-to-end processing time (submission, review, and approval) varies for this regulation. CallHippo works to process all submitted registrations as quickly as possible.
What about toll-free numbers?
Toll-free numbers are not covered by A2P 10DLC rules. They follow a separate verification process — see Messaging Compliance for Toll-Free US/Canada Numbers.
What about numbers using an external SMS partner?
If your number is configured to send SMS through Heymarket, Sakari, or Textline, contact them directly, as they initiate the registration process.
How do I add numbers to an existing campaign?
Submit a ticket to the CallHippo Porting Team with the details, and the team will handle your request.
